Bazlama - Turkish Flat Bread

Ingredients:

– 3 cups all-purpose flour
– 1 cup warm water
– 1/2 cup plain yogurt
– 2 teaspoons active dry yeast
– 1 teaspoon sugar
– 1 teaspoon salt
– 2 tablespoons olive oil

Instructions:

1. Activate the Yeast:
– In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.

2. Prepare the Dough:
– In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt.
– Add the yogurt, olive oil, and the activated yeast mixture to the flour mixture.
– Mix until a dough forms.

3. Knead the Dough:
– Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.

4. Let the Dough Rise:
– Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.

5. Shape the Dough:
– Punch down the dough to release the air.
– Divide the dough into 6-8 equal pieces and shape each piece into a ball.
– Roll out each ball into a circle, about 1/4 inch thick.

6. Cook the Bazlama:
– Heat a non-stick skillet or griddle over medium heat.
– Place a dough circle on the skillet and cook for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and puffed up.
– Repeat with the remaining dough circles.

7. Serve:
– Serve the bazlama warm, brushed with a little olive oil or butter if desired.
