Ingredients
For the Meat:
- 1 lb lamb or beef (or chicken), thinly sliced
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1/2 tsp cumin
- 1/2 tsp paprika (smoked or sweet)
For the Tomato Sauce:
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 cup tomato puree
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 tsp sugar
- Salt and pepper, to taste
For Serving:
- 4 pita breads, cut into pieces
- 1 cup plain yogurt
- 1/4 cup melted butter
- Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions
- Marinate the Meat
In a bowl, combine the sliced meat with olive oil, salt, black pepper, cumin, and paprika. Let it marinate for at least 15 minutes (or longer for deeper flavor). - Prepare the Tomato Sauce
In a saucepan, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until soft and translucent (about 5 minutes). Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute. Stir in the tomato puree, water, sugar, salt, and pepper. Simmer for about 10-15 minutes, allowing the sauce to thicken slightly. - Cook the Meat
In a large skillet over medium-high heat, add the marinated meat. Cook until browned and cooked through, about 6-8 minutes. If using pre-cooked doner meat, just heat it until warmed. - Prepare the Pita Base
Lightly toast the pita bread pieces in the oven or a pan until warm and slightly crispy. Arrange the pita pieces on a serving platter. - Assemble the Dish
Place the cooked meat on top of the pita pieces. Pour the warm tomato sauce evenly over the meat and pita. - Add Yogurt and Butter
Dollop yogurt over the top of the dish. Drizzle melted butter over everything for extra richness. - Garnish and Serve
Sprinkle with fresh parsley for garnish. Serve immediately, preferably with grilled vegetables or a side salad.
