Ingredients
- 2 cups whole milk (or a mix of milk and cream for extra richness)
- 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 tablespoons sugar (adjust to taste)
- 4 ounces dark chocolate (60-70% cocoa), chopped (or use chocolate bars or chocolate disks)
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch (optional, for thickening)
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
- A pinch of salt
Instructions
- Mix Dry Ingredients:
- In a small bowl, whisk together the cocoa powder, sugar, and cornstarch (if using). This helps to prevent lumps.
- Heat the Milk:
- In a saucepan over medium heat, warm the milk gently until it’s steaming but not boiling.
- Add Dry Ingredients:
- Gradually whisk in the cocoa mixture until smooth. Continue to heat for a few minutes, stirring constantly until everything is well combined.
- Add Chocolate:
- Add the chopped dark chocolate to the saucepan. Stir continuously until the chocolate is fully melted and incorporated into the mixture.
- Thicken (if desired):
- If using cornstarch, keep stirring for another minute or two until the hot chocolate reaches your desired thickness. If it becomes too thick, you can add a little more milk to adjust the consistency.
- Flavor:
- Stir in the vanilla extract and a pinch of salt. Taste and adjust sweetness as needed.
- Serve:
- Pour the hot chocolate into mugs and enjoy it warm. It pairs wonderfully with churros or biscotti for dipping!
